This figure is an increase on last year’s mentoring places, with more Law School alumni taking up the opportunity to mentor a law student.
The Law School is now in its second year of offering three distinct mentoring schemes to law students, in collaboration with the PLN.
In recognition of the number of international students enrolled on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Law School, last year the School developed a new mentoring scheme in collaboration with the PLN called the International Law Mentoring Scheme.
The scheme matches international students with legal professionals working in legal roles in their home country. The scheme aims to show how their law degree is relevant in a real-world context, as well as helping to build professional networks in their home country to assist with the transition of working in their home country after graduating.
On this scheme, law students will be mentored by experienced solicitors and barristers based in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Belgium.
This scheme sits alongside the established Professional Mentoring Scheme; matching law students on a one-to-one basis with a corporate solicitor or barrister working in a field related to their career aspirations, and the Law in Society Mentoring Scheme; matching students wishing to work outside of the corporate/commercial side of the legal profession, in areas such as human rights or government legal work.
In total, 122 second and final year LLB, MA and LLM law students will receive support of a mentor for this academic year, with 80 mentors engaged on all three schemes, many of whom are Law School alumni.
We look forward to sharing feedback on the schemes later in the academic year.
