Join our research team: Senior Research Associates needed for inter-disciplinary medical ethics and law project

Press release issued: 21 June 2018

The Centre for Health, Law, and Society (CHLS) and the Centre for Ethics in Medicine (CEM) are currently recruiting two Senior Research Associate posts to join their cross-disciplinary project exploring the best interests of patients in medical ethics and law.

The project, entitled ‘Balancing Best Interests in Healthcare, Ethics and Law (BABEL)’ investigates how the “best interests” of patients who are unable to make decisions for themselves because they lack mental capacity or competence should be understood.

The two full-time post-holders, Senior Research Associate in Healthcare Law and Senior Research Associate in Healthcare Ethics, will be key members of the project team, with one post based in the Centre for Health, Law, and Society, and one based in the Centre for Ethics in Medicine.

The Senior Research Associate in Healthcare Law will be part of workstream 2 of the project, which, led by Dr Judy Laing, will focus on best interests in health care law.

The Senior Research Associate in Healthcare Ethics will join workstream 1, led by Professor Richard Huxtable, which will focus on best interests in health care ethics and clinical practice.

The closing date for applications is midnight on 12 July 2018

The five-year study, for which the University of Bristol was awarded a major Wellcome Trust Collaborative Award, is a collaboration between academics in the CHLS and the CEM and will be led by Professor Richard Huxtable. Working alongside Prof Huxtable are Dr Judy Laing, co-director of the Centre for Health, Law and Society, Dr Sheelagh McGuinness, Dr Jon Ives and Dr Giles Birchley.
