University of Bristol Bar Society hosts Annual Patron Lecture with Dinah Rose QC

Press release issued: 6 February 2018

Dinah Rose QC, is the UK’s leading Silk in the world of Constitutional Law; having worked on cases such as UNISON, R (Evans) v AG, R (Bourgass) v Secretary of State and even advising the BBC on Sexual Harassment in the workplace, she is, as Chambers UK puts it “one of the most supremely talented advocates of her generation.”

President of the University of Bristol Bar Society and second year LLB student, Isobel Kamber talks more about the event:

On Monday 5 February, the University of Bristol Bar Society was lucky enough to host Dinah, as our Patron, for the Annual Bar Society Patron Lecture 2018. With the Moot Court filled to the brim with students and staff, the evening was one of the most popular events of the year, and Dinah was not to disappoint.

Speaking on ‘Judicial Review and the Common Constitution;’ Dinah looked to the changes in implementation of Judicial Review as well as its evolving respect in both the legal and political spheres. As we see in the current climate, the imposition of legislation overlooking the significance of Judicial Review is working to erode the prominence of the common constitution. And we are all left with the question, ‘should our Constitution become codified?’.

The talk drew on many of her previous cases – Bourgass, Evans, IPT and many more, illustrating her prominence on the edge of massive constitutional change.

Whilst we can only speculate what will be the future both legally and politically, what we can affirm is that Dinah is without a doubt a formidable advocate, who is able to command complete respect from her audience in the clarity of her argument and engaging nature of her presence.

Dinah was brilliant.
