Scholarship applications open for first-year Law students

Press release issued: 25 October 2017

Applications are currently open for the Eileen Drummond and Sheila Anderson Fund (EDSA) and the Denise Coates Foundation Bursary for 2017-18.

The University of Bristol is pleased to announce applications are open for the Eileen Drummond and Sheila Anderson Fund (EDSA) and the Denise Coates Foundation Bursary. Both scholarships support first-year undergraduate home / UK students studying single honours Law from low income backgrounds. The awards are anticipated to be made by the end of November for the EDSA and in December for the Denise Coates Foundation.

The Eileen Drummond and Sheila Anderson Fund

Sheila Anderson graduated from Bristol in 1956, and went on to pursue a career in law, working both as a barrister and in-house lawyer throughout her life. Sheila was awarded a state scholarship from the government, which paid for her fees and living expenses at university. Keen to give something back to today’s students, Sheila established a generous fund, through a gift in her Will, to support students in the School of Law.

"I much enjoyed my time there. I wish to give others, who may otherwise be unable to afford it, the opportunity to study law at the University." (Sheila Anderson)

The award is valued at £9,250 and is intended to cover the first year’s tuition fees, with up to five awards available in 2017-2018. The award cannot be held in conjunction with an Access to Bristol award, but can be held in conjunction with the University of Bristol Bursary award. The closing date for the EDSA application form to be submitted to the University is Friday 10th November 2017

The Denise Coates Foundation Bursary

The Co-Founder and Trustee of the Denise Coates Foundation, John Coates, studied law at the University of Bristol. The primary purpose of the Foundation is to make a positive difference to people’s lives and these bursaries are one such way of doing that.

“Study at Bristol provides life-long opportunities. Students graduate as self-motivated, critical thinkers – skills that every employer is looking for. For under-represented students, the transition from school to academia can be particularly tough. With the Denise Coates Foundation bursaries we hope to support students in this character building year and help them lay foundations for future success.” (John Coates October 2015)

The award is valued at £2,000 for the first year of study only, with up to 40 bursaries are available in 2017-18. The Denise Coates Foundation bursary can be held in conjunction with the University of Bristol Bursary as well as the EDSA award. The closing date for completed Denise Coates application forms to be submitted to the University is Friday 10th November 2017
