Human Rights Implementation Centre plays role in development of new tools to prevent torture

On 5 October 2017 the Convention against Torture Initiative (CTI) launched the first in a series of tools designed to assist States to implement their obligations under the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT).

The tools have been developed with the assistance of the University of Bristol Law School's Human Rights Implementation Centre and draw on existing good State practice from around the world to offer practical guidance and ideas for State practitioners and policymakers to effectively implement UNCAT. The first tools to be launched focus on the following themes:

· developing national torture prevention strategies;

· safeguards in the first hours of police custody; and

· non-coercive investigative interviewing.

Additional tools will be developed and made available in due course.
