Press release issued: 26 April 2016

A four-member panel will put the cases for and against Britain leaving the EU this Friday at a sell-out debate hosted by the University of Bristol.

The debate comprises political economist and writer Will Hutton and South West Green Party MEP Molly Scott-Cato, who will both be arguing the case to remain; and Labour MP Graham Stringer and Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan, who will be making the case for the UK’s withdrawal.

The event is supported by the Alumni Association and PolicyBristol, and will be chaired by Dr Phil Syrpis from the School of Law,

“We want to help people take an informed decision about the EU membership referendum. Our panellists will be invited to make a short defence of their case and will then answer questions from the audience in a Question Time-style debate.”

Whether people are currently undecided, or want to challenge both sides to justify their case, this debate aims to increase awareness of the issues, ideas and consequences of the referendum.

The event has now sold out, but can be followed on twitter using the hashtag #TheWestDecides. A recording of the debate will also be available after the event, details to follow.

In a recent blog Dr. Phil Syrpis discussed the legal status of the agreement of the heads of state or government regarding Brexit.

The debate takes place in the Great Hall of the Law School's Wills Memorial Building on Friday April 29 at 6.30pm.
