Press release issued: 6 May 2016

The latest in a series of Law School Brexit events - this time sponsored together with Old Square Chambers in London - was held at the European Commission last night and asked practitioners 'How would Brexit affect your practice?'

At the event, a number of academics and practising lawyers gave their views on the question. Topics covered included discrimination, transfers of undertakings, trade union law, working time, free movement of persons, public procurement and data protection.

Professor Michael Ford QC (University of Bristol Law School) provided an overview of the potential implications of Brexit, drawing on his much publicised opinion for the TUC. Professor Tonia Novitz (also from the Law School) gave an illuminating talk on the effect of the Working Time Directive in UK, highlighting the dangers for workers in the event of Brexit.

Other speakers included prominent barristers from the employment team at Old Square Chambers (including John Hendy QC, Ben Collins QC, Philip Mead, Nadia Motraghi, Ijeoma Omambala and Melanie Tether), academics from Oxford (Professors Paul Craig and Sandra Fredman) and other experts (such as Professor Sue Arrowsmith from Nottingham).

The event was attended by EU Representatives, the Head of Representation of the EU Commission in the UK, Jacqueline Minor, and the Head of Communications and Networks, Daniel Ambrus.
