The Human Rights Implementation Centre continues its work in Nigeria on the implementation of OPCAT

30 March 2015

The HRIC has recently been awarded a grant from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office to continue its work to support efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture in Nigeria.  Under this project the HRIC will provide expert advice to the Nigerian Law Reform Commission to assist them in their efforts to develop an anti-torture bill and under this process to strengthen the legal framework for the National Preventative Mechanism (NPM).

In addition, the HRIC will also organise a training workshop bringing together members of the National Committee on Torture, and other key stakeholders, with the UN Subcommittee on Torture and other international experts, to discuss how to apply the preventive mandate of an NPM in practice.

The project runs from May 2015 to February 2016.
