The Nuffield Foundation has established the UK Administrative Justice Institute at the University of Essex

5 November 2014

The Nuffield Foundation has established the UK Administrative Justice Institute at Essex University, to be lead by Professor Maurice Sunkin.  The aim of the Institute is to kick start the expansion of empirical research on administrative justice in the UK, in particular to address issues relating to

  • the operation of different administrative justice mechanisms
  • encouraging good early decision-making
  • efficiency and effectiveness of administrative justice systems
  • access to justice
  • enforcement and outcomes.

Professor Dave Cowan is a member of the Institute's core team, which has overall responsibility for driving the hub, setting its agenda, deciding its strategic approaches, assessing its progress and ensuring its success.  Dave said "The Nuffield Foundation's support for the UK Administrative Justice Institute provides a welcome boost for the cadre of academic researchers working across disciplines and will provide a centre for the production and promotion of the next generation of scholars.  It is an incredibly exciting moment and I am delighted that Bristol, with its strong research tradition in this field, will be involved in the project."
