Professor Achilles Skordas has been appointed member of the Greek Prime Minister’s Migration Policy Advisory Group. The Advisory Group is composed of eleven members and will assist Prime Minister George Papandreou in the planning of the government’s migration policy. The Group will undertake studies on the links between immigration and domestic labour market, on the integration of third country nationals, the fight against illegal immigration, the management of migration flows, the reception of beneficiaries of international protection, the effective operation of the asylum system, and the fight against xenophobia and racism.

Greece is a primary country for entry of illegal immigrants in the European Union. The Advisory Group will review the parameters and instruments of migration policy, monitor the situation of migration flows, and propose the necessary measures that will enable the country to comply with its obligations under European Union law, the 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention, and the European Convention on Human Rights. The Group will submit periodic reports to the Prime Minister on the state of migration and will make reform proposals.
