Royal Society Wolfson Awards
This scheme is for outstanding scientists who would benefit from a five year salary enhancement as an incentive to their recruitment to or retention in the UK. The application process for these awards is managed by the Royal Society and details can be found at:
https://royalsociety.org/grants-schemes-awards/grants/wolfson-research-merit/
Managers and staff are advised that for all awards that commence in, or after, September 2017 (i.e. for submissions made during the February/March 2017 round onwards) the following University process will apply:
- Staff will be notified at the time we confirm their new award that, prior to the end date of the award, consideration will be given under the Recruitment & Retention Type 2 Supplement process as to whether there is justification for any translation into an R&R Type 2 award.
- Given the prestigious and rigorous nature of these awards, the normal expectation will be that the case will be justified, and in the spirit of the Wolfson Award, where the supplement will be translated into an R&R Type 2 award, that the supplement will be subject to annual pay awards.
- On the very rare occasion where this review gives rise to a proposal to reduce or withdraw the payment (decision to be made in line with the R&R procedure) the R&R case will be presented to the Royal Society for ratification of this decision.
- All ongoing awards will subsequently be managed and maintained under the R&R process, with 5-yearly reviews built in.
