Social Science Building exceeded building regulation requirements

An extension to the Social Science Building demonstrated best practice in sustainability, achieving 'Very Good' BREEAM certification.

The extension included a new entrance, extended student facilities, and additional teaching spaces.

Existing materials were retained and repaired, rather than being replaced to reduce the impact on the environment of using new materials.

Low energy internal and external lighting was installed to reduce CO2 emissions, and new high efficiency boilers minimise NOX emissions, which contribute to acid rain. Water use is reduced through efficient new taps and toilets, and thermal insulation was fitted.

Outside the building, adjacent landscaping was remodelled and increased cycle facilities were provided, supporting reduced car travel to and from campus. A green roof and water feature are also part of the long-term plan to increase biodiversity of the area.

Staff and students were involved throughout the project via a detailed consultation process.
