This review was commissioned to help inform Standard Life Foundation’s strategic plan, which focuses on improving financial wellbeing in the UK. The principal aim of the research was to provide a critical overview of the empirical research related to consumer borrowing behaviour; to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the existing evidence; and to identify gaps in the evidence base. It involved a structured, critical analysis of around 150 relevant items and an assessment of their methodological strengths and weaknesses.
