The Wealth and Assets Survey (WAS) is a longitudinal survey carried out by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). It collects information about the economic wellbeing of households and individuals including their assets and debts, pension provision and factors that may affect financial planning.
The survey was commissioned by:
- Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)
- HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
- Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)
- Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG)
- HM Treasury
- Office for National Statistics (ONS)
Household borrowing and arrears (chapter 7)
Funded by: Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)
BIS commissioned PFRC to analyse borrowing and arrears data from Wave 1 of the Wealth and Assets Survey (WAS) for publication in the main Wave 1 report. The overall aim of this was to provide an overview of the main measures relating to unsecured borrowing and arrears and the distribution of these within the population.
Attitudes (chapter 8)

ONS commissioned PFRC to analyse the attitudinal data from Wave 1 of the Wealth and Assets Survey (WAS) for publication in the main Wave 1 report. The overall aim of this was to provide an overview of the main measures, their distribution within the population and how these relate to main asset and debt measures captured by the survey.
