Tariq Modood comments on ‘the historic moment’ of a British Asian, Rishi Sunak, becoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

1 November 2022

Professor Tariq Modood has recently been quoted in the media on Rishi Sunak becoming Prime Minister.

On Rishi Sunak becoming Prime Minister - Professor Tariq Modood, Director of the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship was quoted in The Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Independent, ABC News (USA), Houston Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, South China Morning Post, The Washington Post, Vancouver Sun and Zing News and through the Associated Press in over 300 outlets worldwide. On 27th October, he was interviewed in BBC TV Politics West.

Tariq Modood argues that 'Whatever his political views, Sunak becoming Prime Minister is historic moment for multiculturalism and racial equality. It has happened much sooner than anyone would have predicted even a few years ago and nor would anyone have predicted that the first non-white Prime Minister would be a Tory. While he may not be the choice of the majority of ethnic minorities, it is good that ethnic minorities are spreading out across the political spectrum and not overly dependent on just one party.'
