Doctoral Conference 2021
The Doctoral Conference Committee (Bristol and Hong Kong) are delighted to announce the School of Education Online Doctoral Conference to be held during the week of 21–25 June 2021. The conference will offer synchronous, asynchronous, online and offline spaces and events that explore and celebrate educational research and teaching practice. We welcome participation from all research students at any stage of their academic journey, from MRes students to those who have concluded their doctoral degrees recently.
- Three keynote addresses
- Parallel presentation sessions held at different times during the week to allow participation from different time zones.
- Online research gallery – a shared online space for posters, podcasts, videos or prerecorded presentations accessible throughout the conference week.
- Walk and talk events organised by the research centres and networks at the School of Education – see below for more details.
Conference theme
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on everyday life has been significant and the themes of the conference consider being an educator, becoming a researcher, and teaching and research practice within these extraordinary times. The theme of ‘Reflection’ invites you to think back on the challenges and the opportunities that arose in classroom practice and educational research as our everyday lives moved online. 'Representation’ asks you to consider both who is now included as well as who is becoming excluded. Finally, ‘Reshaping’ considers what challenges are posed by a post pandemic era and to imagine educational research and classroom practice futures.

What is a Walk & Talk?
Walking-for-thinking is an alternative space for inquiry where there is an interplay between the rhythms of the body and rhythms of walking affording a feeling of enhanced memory and creativity (Keinӓnen, 2016).
A Walk & Talk is an opportunity to take time away from the screen walking alone, with a colleague or in a group and talking about a particular educational theme. This is a new and exciting event organised for the conference by the SoE research centres and networks.
Why should I get involved?
After more than a year of physical distance between colleagues we want to encourage delegates (within local restrictions) to meet up outside and walk together. We have reserved a day of the conference to encourage collaborative engagement, relaxation and fun. This is a great way to support colleagues, the PGR Community at the school and draw upon the wealth of knowledge and experience of the research centres.
What do I need to do?

WALK—You choose when and where to walk. We encourage you to meet with colleagues: this is a great opportunity to bring people together and lead a group.

SHARE—The guides include a link to an online shared space for each research centre and network. You can to take photographs, record sound or video and share your discussions.

TALK—Share your experiences at an online plenary. Times and links are all included in the guide.
