Student Q& A: Thinking about becoming an RE teacher?
We asked PGCE (RE) student Zuri about her experiences at the School of Education, University of Bristol, and studying for a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) in Religious Education. Here's what she said:
Hi Zuri! We are so pleased that you chose the School of Education to study for your PGCE! Can we ask what led you to choose Bristol?
I chose Bristol as I had previously studied for my masters here. I enjoyed the supportive environment provided by the university and its lecturers. The environment that is Bristol city is exhilarating and unique; as a teacher in training, I knew I would be in a well-suited environment where I would be able to make a difference and enjoy the diversity of religious beliefs delivered by such diverse communities.
Why did you choose the PGCE RE programme?
I have always been passionate about studying religion and world views, and I wanted to put this passion to good use. I was intrigued by what is a renowned programme. I knew I would be challenged and pushed to grow to the best of my abilities. The programme was unique, offering several placements in various institutions, such as SEN and non-religious and religious schools and providing a well-rounded and fulfilling course to develop my future career.
What do you like about your programme?
The RE programme is a well-rounded experience. I have enjoyed the support of my tutor and her knowledge of how to teach the subject best. I have enjoyed meeting, liaising with and visiting several religious communities and building relationships with various members of faith. We have been given unique opportunities to attend conferences such as NATRE and be at the forefront of important RE conversations and debates. I have learned and grown from my peers in a supportive and open environment; we have all felt valued as individuals and teachers, allowing us to thrive.
What are your plans, for career or further study?
I have accepted a full-time Philosophy and Belief teacher position starting in September! I look forward to growing and developing my teaching skills and harbouring my subject knowledge.
Fantastic news, congratulations! And finally – how do you think studying at the SoE has helped you get there?
The SoE has supported me throughout my job applications and interviewing process. The world of education can be exciting and daunting. However, the SoE prepare students well for what is to come developing our confidence to make us perfectly suitable candidates for jobs. Preparing us to work, thrive in a team, and develop our unique teaching persona. I couldn't have done it without the SoE.
