PGR Hub FAQs

Everything you need to know about the PGR Hub space and its operation.

What are the terms and conditions of using the Hub?

No food & drink is to be consumed in the training rooms. All furniture needs to be returned to its original configuration. The Guidance Document contains information about terms and conditions and fire safety.

Can I bring my non-PGR friends to the Hub?

The PGR Hub is designed as a space specifically for postgraduate research students at the University of Bristol. This does not include PGT (postgraduate taught) students.

Can I bring external (non-University) guests and guest speakers to the Hub?

Yes, this is allowed provided you have contacted the PGR Hub mailbox in advance (for one-off visits). External guests need a contact number to gain access to the ground floor of Senate House. If they are going to be a visitor for more than a few hours, request a Visitors Card from Estates and log in their details.

Is food & drink allowed in the Hub?

You can consume food and drink in the PGR Hub. All PGRs can use the self-service tea & coffee facilities in the Hub's kitchen throughout regular opening hours. However, food and drink (other than bottled water) is not permitted in the Training Rooms 2.21 and 2.22.

Can I get catering or takeaways e.g. Dominos pizza delivered to the PGR Hub?

Yes, but provide a contact number for deliveries to be appropriately received at the ground floor of Senate House. Consume the catered deliveries in the main open lounge of the Hub, either the Collaborative Space or the new standing food area (adjacent to Training Rooms). Clear any rubbish and recycling when you are finished.  The Guidance Document contains details on food, drink, and alcohol consumption.

If I book a Training Room will I automatically get use of the standing food area?

Yes, the space outside Rooms 2.21 and 2.22 is the designated area for catered deliveries and consumption of food/drink. The movable screens/baffles on wheels help divide the space i.e. to separate the standing food area and nearby couches if necessary.

Can the entire PGR Hub be booked?

Yes, occasionally. This is typically for events in the evening, on the condition that the main lounge of the Collaborative Space remains open to any PGR who visits. Please contact the PGR Hub mailbox to enquire.

What resources do you have available for events e.g. writers retreats?

The PGR Hub has a range of basic stationery and electronic resources to support PGR and staff-led events. We have several multi-plug extension leads, flipchart markers, whiteboard markers, fidgets, arts and crafts items (scissors, tape, paper, glue sticks).  Please contact the PGR Hub mailbox for assistance.

Do you have lockers I can store my belongings in?

We don't have space for lockers in the PGR Hub. However, the Research Postgraduate study room in the Arts & Social Sciences Library has lockers for your belongings available 24/7.

Can I use blu-tac to add posters/diagrams to the walls temporarily?

Yes, only if temporarily and only if using blu-tac. Please don’t use pins or other adhesives. For booked events and activities contact the PGR Hub mailbox for assistance.

What other rooms are available for quiet study?

There are quiet study spaces on Levels 2 and 3 of Senate House which are first come first served i.e. not bookable (access via UCard). On level 5 there are activity rooms for student-led sessions managed by the Students’ Union.  The Research Postgraduate study room in the Arts & Social Sciences Library offers individual height-adjustable study desks, comfy armchairs, space for collaborative working and lockers for your belongings.

How can I get help in an emergency, or when there are no staff members around the Hub?

If there is a fire, please evacuate the building calmly and immediately by exiting through the emergency exit in room 2.22 or via the way you came in on Level Two via the stairs. The assembly point is outside, across Tyndall Avenue, at Royal Fort Gardens. Dial 999 to report a fire or request an ambulance first, and then inform Security Services. Security Services operates a 24/7/365 operation: In the event of EMERGENCY ONLY ring 0117 3311223 (internal phone 112233). All calls to this number will be recorded for security purposes.

For Non-Emergency security issues please call 0117 928 7848 (internal 87848). All calls to this number will be recorded for security purposes.
