About the Bristol Doctoral College

The Bristol Doctoral College (BDC) enhances the experience of postgraduate research (PGR) students of all disciplines at the University of Bristol.

We work alongside Schools, Faculties and other professional services teams to ensure the role of PGR students within the university is recognised, supported and developed.

We focus on five key areas of activity:

  1. Community: We deliver community building, networking and social opportunities to bring PGRs from across the University together, supported by our PGR focused communications channels. We also manage the PGR Hub in Senate House.
  2. Core skills: We deliver and curate a programme of non-disciplinary personal and professional development, to support the PGR students in their research journey.
  3. Collaborations: We enhance PGR experience through partnerships globally and locally, and support bid development and training grant delivery to expand these opportunities.
  4. Culture: We promote an inclusive and sustainable research environment through scholarships; projects to support underrepresented or marginalised PGR communities; and work with the Students’ Union to ensure PGR voice is heard.
  5. Continuous improvement: We lead, influence and support policy, process and systems improvements relating to PGR, working with internal partners.

These activities contribute to the University’s Strategic Plan for Postgraduate Research, which is developed and managed by the BDC on behalf of University Postgraduate Research Committee.

The Bristol Doctoral College sits within the Division of Research, Enterprise and Innovation.
