Studentships and scholarships

The School of Chemistry is pleased to offer a number of studentships and scholarships to applicants with exceptional research potential. Applications are accepted year round.

Bristol Postgraduate Research Scholarships

For 2024 entry the university is offering 80 scholarships to outstanding UK and international postgraduate research candidates. These are equivalent to a Research Council provision offering full fees and a stipend to cover living costs each year. Applications are open for programmes beginning in 2024.

The Chemistry deadline for applications is 24th March 2024.

The following scholarships are available for applicants eligible for home fees:

Postgraduate loans

The UK Government has a Postgraduate Loan Scheme which has been available since 2016. This provides a contribution towards the cost of study. Further information can be found on the government website.

Bristol Master’s Scholarship

The Bristol Master’s Scholarship awards 50 talented UK home students from widening participation backgrounds £2,000 each towards their taught postgraduate study (MA, MSc or Mres) at the University of Bristol for 2024/25 entry.

Applicants must have already applied for a postgraduate taught programme at Bristol to start an application.

Opportunity Bristol

Opportunity Bristol provides financial support to UK students from Black backgrounds to undertake a fully-funded research-related master's degree, and will help successful awardees to gain the research skills and experience needed to apply for funded doctoral research opportunities in the future.

International Scholarship Opportunities

The following opportunities are available for international applicants:

University of Bristol China Scholarship Council joint-funded PhD Scholarship

A total of 60 scholarships for PhD research across the University were made available for 2023/24 entry. Applications have now closed for 2024/25 entry but further information will be displayed for 2025/26 opportunities in due course.

Zutshi-Smith Scholarship

This award covers the full cost for an Indian student to undertake a PhD course at the University of Bristol. The scholarship is generously funded by the legacy of the late Dr Derek Zutshi (MB ChB 1957, Hon LLD 1999) who passed away in 2007. Applicants must be ordinarily resident in India, and preference will be given to applicants of Kashmiri origin.

The scholarship is fully-funded and will be available for up to four years of study. It covers University of Bristol tuition fees, an annual living stipend in line with Research UK funding levels, one return flight to/from India, and an allowance for research costs. Applications have closed for entry in 2024/25. 

Commonwealth Scholarship

Citizens of developing Commonwealth countries may be eligible for funding from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for master's and PhD study. Applications have closed for 2024/25 entry.

Bench fees in chemistry are between £2,625 and £10,500 per annum depending on the SoC Bench Fee Bands 2023/24 (PDF, 39kB)
