New publication describes positive impact of Smart Worksheets in first-year quantitative chemistry course

13 January 2025

The School of Chemistry's Professor Dudley Shallcross, Dr Amy McCarthy-Torrens, and Dr Francesca Dennis have had an article published in the Journal of Chemical Education on their collaboration with Learning Science Ltd on Smart Worksheets and their positive impact on the first year quantitative chemistry course since being introduced in 2020.

Smart Worksheets are, in their simplest form, question sheets with a variety of options re answers depending on the question type. Students can make a choice from a panel of options, being given immediate feedback if they choose the wrong one, they could ask for a hint and in some examples, there are supporting dynamic diagrams and immediately viewed plotting functions.

Not only have students made great use of them and report how helpful they have been, showing the quantitative tools in the context of Chemistry, they have helped the tutors of the course to better understand where the students struggle and has allowed us to use tutorial time much more effectively.
