Tori Hammond
Senior Research Commercialisation Manager (Faculty of Health & Life Science)
I am the Senior Research Commercialisation Manager responsible for Health and Life Science projects, supporting Bristol academics with the commercialisation of intellectual property through licensing and the formation of spin-out companies. I joined the University of Bristol in June 2024 after a decade working in technology transfer at Imperial College London, University of Exeter and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust. Before this, I worked in drug discovery R&D at GlaxoSmithKline and hold a PhD in biochemistry and a degree in molecular biology from the University of Bath.

I am the senior Research Commercialisation Manager responsible for Science and Engineering projects. My team and I are always keen to hear of new innovative ideas that will benefit from, and achieve greater impact through, a commercial development route. We also advise on all aspects of intellectual property and its protection. Prior to working at Bristol, I have worked at Swansea University on an EU-funded IP project; I have worked for a large NHS Trust in England as a Senior Commercial Manager. I also spent many years running an IP advisory business for healthcare and government bodies and have worked for a FTSE-100 company commercialising hi-tech audio technology across North America.

This can include providing advice on managing Intellectual Property, evaluating market potential and developing business plans. My role also involves conducting patent searches, liaising with patent attorneys, and setting up license agreements and spin out companies.

I work with colleagues in the Faculties of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Law in commercialisation and impact at scale activities. This includes non-traditional commercialisation and venture creation. My role involves providing advice on and setting up license agreements and spin out companies including social enterprises and other business types. This support can include help to access training, funding and external partners, as well as the development of business plans and strategy.

Lorraine Fairbanks
Translational Hub Manager (Faculty of Arts, Law & Social Sciences)
I support social sciences, law and arts faculty to create sustainability from their research projects. I help academics by supporting them through training opportunities like the ESRC/AHRC Catalyst training. I assist in the creation of spinouts, social enterprises, and B Corps and licenses from university knowledge exchange. I manage the Bristol Translational Hub where we bring together colleagues across DREI to offer a rounded support from PolicyBristol, Impact Development, Public Engagement, Commercialisation, PLN and KTP.
