Data Loss: the Politics of Disappearance, Destruction, and Dispossession in Digital Societies

29 October 2024, 2.00 PM - 29 October 2024, 3.30 PM

Nanna Bonde Thylstrup

BDFI, 65 Avon Street, BS2 0PZ

Contrary to the prevailing belief that digital societies ‘never forget,’ this talk by Nanna Bond Thylstrup explores the multiple politics of digital data loss. Arguing that data loss is not a mere technical failure but an inherent feature of digital systems and its economies, the talk examines its material, political, and cultural dimensions.

Through a conceptual framework of loss, the talk will explore critical questions such as: What does it mean for digital data to ‘disappear’? How do digital infrastructures shape new practices of intentional data destruction? And how do communities experience and form through digital dispossession?

These inquiries are addressed not only as empirical challenges but also as pressing ethico-political concerns.

Nanna's talk will be approximately 40 minutes. Q&A and networking will follow afterwards. Dr Devika Narayan will chair the session.

This is an in-person event.
