In this talk, we present an overview of our 3-year project, focusing on:  

• The partnership: reflecting on the insights gained from setting up an interdisciplinary collaboration between academia and industry
• The fieldwork: exploring how sociotechnical approaches can be mobilised to reframe explanations for machine learning and intervene on how explanations are ‘done’   
• The outcomes: discussing how we extended the concept of XAI at LV=GI, breaking down the linear model of impact by re-positioning expertise to a joint engineering/social science collaboration  

The results of our project underscore the importance of engaged, interdisciplinary research in critiquing as well as shaping AI practice.
