Widening Participation at Bristol Veterinary School

What is widening participation?

Widening participation aims to give everyone an equal opportunity to study at university regardless of their social, financial, cultural or geographical background.

It is recognised that some students will experience many barriers to fulfilling their ambitions and potential. Widening participation seeks to recognise and remove some of the barriers and educational inequalities experienced by these students through raising aspirations and offering support to study at university.

Research suggests that many of our veterinary students at the University of Bristol made their career decisions pre-16 and we aim to provide information and support for all students, from all backgrounds, to be able to make informed choices about a career in a veterinary profession and the support to pursue their ambitions to become veterinary professionals.

Widening Participation at the University of Bristol and Bristol Veterinary School

Our mission is to diversify the student body at the University of Bristol and Bristol Veterinary School by empowering and supporting prospective students from underrepresented backgrounds to access university. We are working towards ambitious targets as set out in our Access and Participation plan.

At Bristol Veterinary School we work in collaboration with Schools, Colleges and community organisations and with colleagues across the University on a diverse range of programmes and events.

If you are a teacher and want to find out more about working with Bristol Veterinary School, you can look at our widening participation programmes and events page or contact us at veterinary-outreach@bristol.ac.uk

If you are a school student and want to find out more about widening participation programmes and events look at the events pages and individual programmes to see how the University of Bristol can help you to make choices

In addition to outreach programmes we support prospective students from underrepresented backgrounds through the admissions system with our contextual offer scheme. Our contextual offer is a grade reduction of up to two grades below the standard entry requirements and is made to those from backgrounds who, generally, are less likely to come here. Once here, data shows that our contextual offer students achieve above average academically. If you complete one of our post 16 programmes you may be eligible for a guaranteed contextual offer. We work in collaboration with our colleagues in the Student Inclusion Team to ensure that students are supported to achieve their potential when they arrive at Bristol.
