What you need to study online

Find out what IT requirements you need to study online with the University of Bristol.

IT requirements

You do not need advanced IT skills to study online with us – you just need to be comfortable with using a computer and the internet.

You'll need:

  • the latest operating system from Microsoft or Apple
  • a desktop computer or laptop with:
    • a minimum of 8 GB of memory (RAM)
    • a minimum 512 GB hard drive (internal storage)
  • a reliable internet connection with a minimum bandwidth of 4 Mbps
  • a webcam and a headset with a microphone
  • an up-to-date internet browser such as Edge, Firefox, Chrome or Safari
  • up-to-date virus and malware protection software.

For certain degree programmes, you might need a specific device computer and/or software. You can check a programme's prospectus page for this information.
