How studying online works

Find out how you'll learn and be supported while studying online with the University of Bristol.

Teaching and learning

Our teaching staff use a range of digital tools aimed to give you the most effective and impactful online learning experience. You will be guided throughout your programme on how to access learning resources online and how to use the relevant technology to support your own learning and research.

Our online programmes are also designed to support student belonging and encourage peer-to-peer collaboration where possible. Depending on your programme, you can expect to participate in a variety of activities such as:

  • Interactive live teaching sessions
  • On-demand videos and case studies
  • Thought provoking podcasts and webinars
  • Reflective blogs
  • Online forums and discussion boards.

While studying online, you will be able to use the University Library's online resources such as eBooks, eJournals and online resource lists.

You can check a programme's prospectus page for detailed information about the programme structure and unit content.

Student experience and support

In addition to your technology supported online learning, you will join a vibrant and diverse community of students and staff. You will be supported by your programme director and/or be allocated a personal tutor to support you academically throughout your programme at Bristol.

Although you will not be on campus, you will be able to contact them by email or arrange a live voice or video call.

As a student online, you will be able to access a range of support services including:
