Laminatinglamination film

Lamination is the process of applying a thin plastic layer to the printed sheet, it is used to enhance or protect. It is commonly used for the cover of a booklet or where the printed matter has a possibility of coming into contact with moisture or a liquid.

There are many types of lamination, but the lamination which can be carried out in Print Services falls into 3 categories.

Litho Printing

Matt this leaves a non-reflective surface. It gives an elegant and sophisticated finish though can show finger marks quite quickly. An anti-scuff version of matt lamination is available, but this is not something provided by Print Services

Gloss - this is a high gloss finish which has the effect of sharpening images and increasing contrast. Whilst is will mark easily, it can be wiped clean

Soft Touch – this is a variant of matt lamination which has a rubbery tactile finish. A more expensive process, but it can be used very creatively to produce a product which is pleasing both visually and to the touch.

Banners, Posters & Signage

Lamination does serve a purpose but is not environmentally friendly. Laminated sheets are difficult (though not impossible) to recycle. However, if the item has a long life span, adding a lamination will extend its life and potentially have a lower environmental impact than multiple printings.

There are alternatives to lamination which should be considered:

  • High gloss paper – this is a specialist paper which provides a similar end result as a gloss lamination and also offers some degree of water resistance. This is a better environmental solution compared to lamination

  • Synthetic – whilst synthetic papers are made of plastic, they are almost indestructible making them particularly suitable for use over many years. The print can also be submerged in water, something not even laminated paper can boast. Used carefully and appropriately, synthetic papers can also be the environmental choice.
