Data is beautiful: outstanding data visualisations recognised at University Research Institute event

BCFN Student Kate Oliver wins runner up in The Jean Golding Institute’s Data is Beautiful competition.

Kate Oliver, a PhD student at the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials (BCFN), acheived runner up at the competition for her work on  ‘How far can an awn take you? Morphing in nature and beyond'.  

Speaking after the results were announced, Kate said: "I am very flattered and surprised by this generous prize, having seen the quality of the entries! It shows the breadth of data and interpretations across the university, and I hope to learn more about novel uses of my data through thw work of the JGI."

Professor William Browne, Director of the Jean Golding Institute said: “One of the key challenges with data-intensive research is how to present the data in a way that makes it engaging, concise, useful and insightful to those outside of the project."

The Instistute aims to showcase world-leading research and provide new opportunities for staff, students and the wider community. Jean Golding, Emeritus Professor of Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology and the Institue's namesake, was present at the event.
