In 2019, the University of Bristol became the first higher education institution in the UK to declare a climate emergency. The climate emergency declaration is an opportunity for the University to reaffirm its commitment to become a carbon neutral campus by 2030 and to explore how action towards this target can be accelerated and broadened in scope.
What action are we taking in the School of Physics?
The School of Physics is committed to improving sustainability in all areas across our buildings and laboratories. We have a Sustainability Action Committee which comprises of staff and students from all areas of the School, meeting regularly throughout the year. The committee organises various events, talks and other engaging activities to help promote a sustainable culture within the School, and wider Faculty.
In 2021 we achieved 100% LEAF Green Lab certifications across all labs in the School of Physics. We also achieved a Gold NUS Green Impact Award for all our offices in HH Wills Physics Laboratory. The school has written a Climate Action Plan which includes a wide variety of actions we are working on to reduce our carbon usage over the next 5 years.
