Precision Flavour Physics at LHCb, Department of Physics.
Applications are invited for a Research Assistant or Associate with the Particle Physics Group of the School of Physics to work on precision flavour physics at the LHCb experiment. The position is available as soon as the selection process is completed (expected 1 November 2012), and is funded until 30 September 2017. The start date is negotiable.
The unusual length of the contract (just short of five years), the option of employment at salary grade J (for experienced researchers), and the opportunity to take a key, responsible role in an exciting research project, make this an ideal career development position for outstanding postdoctoral researchers on their way towards a lectureship/faculty position. LHCb is the dedicated flavour physics experiment at the LHC. The huge datasets at LHCb allow high-precision measurements with unprecedented sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model. One of the most powerful techniques in flavour physics are amplitude/Dalitz plot analyses, for example to extract the key CP violation parameter gamma. This postdoctoral position is part of an ERC-funded project to exploit amplitude analysis methods for precision measurements in beauty and charm physics at LHCb, and to develop these methods further in collaboration with other experimentalists and theorists. This project work will take place in the context of the Bristol LHCb group, which is a long-standing member of LHCb with significant analysis expertise, especially in amplitude and Dalitz analysis methods, and which recently obtained significant funding from the European Research Council to expand its activities in this area.
You will, jointly with the PI, drive the physics and data analysis programme of this project and will be expected to contribute to all aspects of the programme with expertise and creativity. Further tasks includedata analysis, participation in student supervision, and the responsibility for the availability and accessibility of data to the group, which includes trigger and pre-selection algorithms, and maintaining the data on the group’s own computing cluster.
