Dr Jake Ayres accepts the EMFL Prize

6 July 2023

Since 2009, the European Magnetic Field Laboratory (EMFL) has awarded the annual EMFL Prize to an individual “for outstanding achievements in science done in high magnetic fields”.

This year, 2023, the prize was awarded to Dr. Jake Ayres for his contributions to the study of unconventional superconductors. Jake’s work has involved extensive use of EMFL facilities, both d.c. at the HFML (Nijmegen) and pulsed at LNCMI (Toulouse). Perhaps most significant are studies of the in-plane magneto-transport of cuprate superconductors, in particular, the magnetoresistance of overdoped cuprates Tl2201 and Bi2201 published in Nature.

His contributions at high fields also include studies of of charge-ordered, underdoped cuprate Y123 under hydrostatic pressure, archetypal nematic superconductor FeSe (including under pressure) and nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS (all performed at the HFML). Jake was awarded the prize at the EMFL User Meeting 2023.
