Bristol Illustrious Visiting Professorships

The Bristol Illustrious Visiting Professorships (BIVPs) scheme was launched in 2020 in collaboration with the University’s Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO). Through this scheme we will bring eminent global research leaders to the University to give a series of lectures and to engage with our academic community. The lectures themselves will be recorded and shared online, demonstrating our ability to attract scholars of the highest calibre, showcasing the UoB as a world-leading research institution, and promoting and celebrating the Visiting Professor him, her, or themself.

Professorships will be based on a calendar year, allowing time for three high-profile visits to Bristol on average. Note however that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions we are currently running these as partially- or fully-virtual Visiting Professorships, dependent on the current travel restrictions.

Due to the prestige of these awards and the calibre of nominee these Professorships will be by invitation only, and we only anticipate hosting a small number of BIVPs per year.

If you would like to find out more about the invitation or nomination process, please contact ird-office@bristol.ac.uk.

The BIVP Award for 2021/22 was awarded to Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, in recognition of her exceptional and inspirational work in university leadership and in mathematics education in post-apartheid South Africa.
