What are you studying?

A PhD in Functional Nanomaterials.

What do you particularly enjoy about postgraduate study in your department?

I really enjoy the good working environment within the laboratory and office. Also, having all the facilities and support of all the Chemistry staff and students.

Why did you decide to apply for your programme?

My programme is interdisciplinary and allows me to study several subjects and enlarge my knowledge. Functional nanomaterials covers physics, chemistry, and biology among others; and you can work in different working environments. 

What are the facilities in your department like?

Before coming to study at the University of Bristol, in particular in the Chemistry department, I didn’t have any idea how much equipment you can use for your particular project. Also the rest of the buildings are nicely built with everything a student needs for working, and also having lunch or having a break during work time. 

How much support do you get from staff?

The staff are very friendly, efficient and really helpful when I need something or I have doubts in how to use an equipment. I feel very comfortable asking and knowing that I will get support. 

How does postgraduate study differ from an undergraduate degree?

It's really different: firstly, an undergraduate degree involves learning about a wide area of interest, going to lectures, and having more contact with your classmates. Whilst with postgraduate study, you still learn new things but now you are working in the academic environment, with an established schedule and presenting advances on your work every week or more. However, growing in an academic aspect also increases your personal growth and is fun and tough. 

Is there anything you would want to tell a prospective postgraduate student considering studying Chemistry?

Well, being a biologist and having a MSc in Nanoscience, and now working towards a PhD in Chemistry, I can say to any student that the choice I made in studying this subject is the best option I have ever made so far. I am sure that they will enjoy being here and studying in one of the best schools of the University. 

What are you planning to do after completing your studies?

Following my PhD, I would like to pursue my interest in research in the area of Nanoscience either through doing a postdoc, or possibly researching with a government department or other public sector body.
