Why choose Bristol?

The School of Chemistry is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in both teaching and research and provides a vibrant and dynamic environment in which to work and study. Our strength in research was confirmed by the results of the last Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment, a national audit of universities’ research output, which placed Bristol among the top four chemistry departments in the UK.

We have state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with modern instrumentation and facilities, and training is assisted by knowledgeable and helpful support staff. There are over 250 postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers from many different countries working with more than 55 academic staff on a wide range of exciting projects, often in collaboration with industry and academics world-wide.

We aim to enable postgraduates to achieve their full potential within a supportive environment. Postgraduates make a vital contribution in research whilst developing a variety of skills in chemistry, as well as confidence in leading oral and poster presentations at the University and at international conferences, in report writing and in public outreach work.

We have an extensive research seminar programme with internationally leading scientists reporting their latest results. Also available are special postgraduate courses run as part of the two Doctoral Training Centres alongside the varied series of postgraduate lectures offered by the Graduate School. The Graduate Chemistry Association (GCA) is run by postgraduates and is a focal point for social activities.

The University is situated within a beautiful part of Bristol. This vibrant city is surrounded by stunning countryside and has excellent communication networks (by road, rail and air) and is a great place to live.
