Introducing MRes Veterinary Nursing and Bioveterinary Science graduate Olivia Jacques

The dissertation project by our recent MRes Veterinary Nursing and Bioveterinary Science graduate, Olivia Jacques, has been recognised by the Veterinary Cardiovascular Society! Olivia shared her motivations, challenges, and experiences during her studies with us.

Olivia chose the course at the University of Bristol because it offered the only veterinary nursing degree that combines veterinary nursing with bio veterinary science. She particularly enjoyed her final year, which included her dissertation. Olivia found it fascinating to explore a topic she was deeply passionate about in great depth. She also loved the advanced nursing module in her final year, describing it as both challenging and rewarding, and highly beneficial for her future career as a veterinary nurse.

Her dissertation focused on Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease in dogs. Olivia chose this topic because her own dog suffers from the disease, and she wanted to deepen her understanding of its symptoms and implications.

The biggest challenge of her dissertation was mastering the statistics. Fortunately, her supervisor, Melanie Hezzel, was a statistics expert and provided invaluable guidance. Melanie's prompt responses to Olivia’s questions and emails, despite her busy schedule, were a huge support throughout the process.

Olivia is now working at Seymour Vets, a small animal practice in South Devon, where she also completed her placements during university. She felt fortunate to be offered a job there while completing her placement and has since relocated to the area.
