The event was free to attend and attracted over 1,000 visitors from North Somerset and the surrounding area. Fortunately, the forecast torrents held off until the end of the day, allowing everyone to enjoy their visit without getting too wet! This gave attendees the chance to take an exclusive look behind the scenes at Bristol Veterinary School and find out what staff and students get up to, day-in, day-out.
Event Highlights
The day was packed with activities that delighted attendees of all ages:
- Have-a-go clinical demos: Visitors had the chance to experience hands-on clinical demonstrations throughout the day. Particular favourites included learning how to bandage a paw and milking the model dairy cow!
- Fun games and children’s activities: A variety of games and activities, including a Treasure Hunt and Crazy Golf, were put on to keep the young ones entertained and engaged.
- Tours of the Langford Veterinary practice: Guided tours showcased the state-of-the-art facilities and provided a glimpse into daily operations.
- Tours of Wyndhurst Farm: Visitors were able to learn how a working farm operates and see the cows who call Langford home.
- Engaging talks: A series of informative talks covered various aspects of animal health and veterinary science.
Inspiring the next generation
It was heartwarming to see so many children not only having fun but also learning essential skills needed in the veterinary field. This exposure may well inspire some of them to pursue careers as veterinary scientists or veterinary nurses. We hope to welcome some of our visitors back in a few years as the next generation of veterinary students at Bristol Veterinary School.
Strengthening community ties
The community is at the heart of Bristol Veterinary School's objectives. Our work focuses on improving the health and wellbeing of animals, including those within our local community. The Community Fun Day was an excellent opportunity to share our initiatives and showcase the positive impact we are making on animal welfare.
By opening our doors to our friends and neighbours, we hope to strengthen the bond between the school and the community, highlighting our commitment to advancing veterinary medicine and supporting local animal health.
Thanks to our partners
We would like to give particular thanks to all those who helped make the day so special on Saturday:
Langford Trust, RSPCA, Ben our fantastic balloon modeler, The Bishop Sutton and Stowey WI group, Claudia our talented face painter, The North Somerset Bee Keepers, Street Vet, Jenna from Occasion Balloons, WaggyWishes and Wrington Rotary Club.
Looking forward
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of the Community Fun Day. Your enthusiasm made the event truly memorable and we hope our visitors enjoyed themselves as much as we did. We look forward to hosting more events in the future, where we continue to engage with, and support, our wonderful community
