The University uses a mixed fleet of road vehicles for a range of functions including campus operations, research fieldwork, student transport and business travel.
This fleet consists of:
The University owns or leases around 100 road vehicles, mainly cars and vans. These are currently managed by schools and departments to meet their own transport requirements.
Under our Cleaner Fleet Programme, the Sustainability team works with schools and departments to improve the environmental performance of University fleet operations, for example by:
The University aims to fully electrify its road vehicle fleet by 2025-26 and in the meantime is working to ensure full compliance of its own fleet operations with Bristol’s Clean Air Zone.
Further information for schools and departments which operate departmental vehicles is available on Sharepoint.
For more occasional transport needs (when public transport, walking or cycling are not viable), schools and departments are encouraged to make use of the University’s contract with Enterprise Rent-a-Car and Car Club.
A wide range of vehicles is available for daily, weekly or monthly hire at competitive rates with delivery to and collection from campus when required.
Staff can also sign up to the University’s corporate membership of Enterprise Car Club and hire one of several vehicles directly from the street for as little as an hour.
Subject to insurance and other policy requirements being met, staff may also use their own private vehicles on University business if other options are not available.
The University has several contracts with local bus and coach companies to provide student transport. Of these, only Unibus services (operated by First) are managed by the Sustainability team.
