AvonCAP Study

Why are we doing this research?

We urgently need to know how respiratory disease may change due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including whether it makes other lung infections more or less likely. Alongside COVID-19, we are particularly interested in pneumococcus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as both cause a lot of disease. These infections may potentially be preventable in the future by new vaccines.

To make sure our research findings are representative of the general population, Avon CAP would like to access the health care records of all adults who are admitted to participating hospitals with possible respiratory infection. We will only collect information on people who meet these criteria.

How we will do this research

We hope to enrol about 10,000 patients per year this way and will try to ask permission (consent) from as many patients admitted with chest infections as we can. We recognise that we may not be able to approach all individuals with respiratory infection during their hospital admission, and we hold specific approval from the Health Research Authority’s Confidentiality Advisory Group to undertake research using this data without individual consent.
