'One of the best decisions I've ever made'

The year in industry programme, a new possibility for engineering students, was daunting at a first, but turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I was working at the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) which allowed me to participate in so many amazing projects: for example, there was the FlyZero project; a 12 month programme looking into zero emission aircraft; or the ATI Boeing accelerator, which involved funding and supporting start-ups in the aerospace industry. I was also able to look into the future of the aerospace industry, seeing how we could combine the desire to travel with the need to reduce carbon emissions. It also gave me the opportunity to connect with many people in the field.

Being able to apply what I had learnt at university in real life was incredibly satisfying. I learnt so much on the placement year and was able to develop many skills such as independent learning, working with uncertainty, overcoming stress, and how to send emails!

Making the most of university life

It was however wonderful to return to university. I love to sit in a study space and get swept up in the atmosphere of people studying and discussing subjects they enjoy.

The city is such a wonderful place to be; I love walking around between lectures or sitting in one of the green spaces to chat with friends. I also love how many societies there are, and I am definitely making the most of having so much to do at my fingertips.

I was also able to apply all that I had learnt and practiced in my year in industry. I'm also far more motivated for the years ahead and know I can get a head start on my accreditation as an engineer.
