Funder Open Access Requirements

Funder Requirements

Most funders have open access polices that they will expect you to abide by. Even if your research is solely funded by the University, you still have to follow the REF Open Access Policy. The details of the REF policy are below.

REF Open Access Policy

What's included?

  • Journal articles
  • Papers in formal conference proceedings (ones with an ISSN)

Green Open Access

  • You need to deposit a copy of the Author's Accepted Manuscript of any journal article or paper in a formal conference proceeding (one with an ISSN) into Pure
  • You need to do this within three months of the date of acceptance

Gold Open Access

  • Gold Open Access papers are automatically considered compliant with this policy
  • There is no funding available from the REF or the University to pay for Gold Open Access
  • You need to deposit a copy of the Author's Accepted Manuscript to Pure to comply with the University's Open Access policy, and in case there are any problems with the Gold Open Access arrangements

Are there any exceptions?

If you have a valid reason for not depositing or for missing the three months from the date of acceptance deadline, you may be able to claim an exception. You can do so using the REF Open Access Exception Request form. There is a list of all applicable exceptions at the end of the form.

Other funders

If you have funding from another source, such as one of the UK Research Councils, Wellcome Trust or one of the other COAF charities, you will have to abide by their Open Access Policy too. You should take a moment to look at the Library's list of common Funder Requirements.
