New programme, MSc Global Health Policy, launched at the School for Policy Studies

19 September 2024

We are delighted to announce the launch of this new interdisciplinary social sciences programme, for entry in September 2025. The programme is designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed for real-world global health influence.

The new MSc in Global Health Policy will equip students to critically engage with current and future global health policy challenges, to critically question the interplay between knowledge, evidence, policy-making and power, and to inspire students to design sustainable and equitable policy solutions.

A distinguishing feature of this programme is the interdisciplinary approach that situates global health policy within a social determinants and health justice perspective.

The course will cover our most pressing transnational health and care challenges, such as pandemic response and preparedness, the health impacts of climate change and poverty, ageing, mental illness, food security, migration and health, and global increases in long-term health conditions.

Teaching will be led by staff who specialise in social and public policy, sociology, global governance, social inequality and poverty, political economy, and epidemiology and by guest lecturers who influence and make global health policy. Students will have opportunities to develop campaigns, interventions and research projects that directly address key priorities in the field.

Research-rich units will encourage the application of critical analyses of policy-making to global health case studies within and between Global North and Global South geographies.

Acting Programme Director, Nasrul Ismail,

‘Our new MSc in Global Health Policy is developed to equip students with the expertise necessary to tackle both current and emerging challenges in global health.

'By focusing on evidence interrogation, knowledge translation, and co-production, our curriculum ensures that students are prepared to drive meaningful change at the national and international arena.

'With nearly 80% of our graduates utilising the skills acquired during their studies, we are confident that this programme will reinforce our dedication to developing highly skilled and effective professionals in the global health policy field.’

The programme will combine theory and practical applications through a range of taught units and a policy evidence toolkit, and through independent work. There will be two pathways for the programme, developed to specifically offer both applied and empirical routes to develop employability and analytical skills.

Students taking the Work–Based Applied Research pathway will be placed with a relevant organisation providing the opportunity to further embed skills learned on the course by working on a co-produced research-based project with the host organisation.  Students on the Dissertation pathway will undertake an independent research project assessed by a draft academic journal article.

This programme aims to provide students with the opportunity to examine the power dynamics of a fluid global sector of critical importance and to become the change-makers of the future.
