Press release issued: 13 October 2022

Research by academics and partners from the School for Policy Studies will form part of a review by the Government into adult social care provision in the UK.

The House of Lords Adult Social Care (ASC) Committee has launched an inquiry to look at what needs to change to create a “fair, resilient and sustainable” adult social care system.

Academics in the School submitted research that looked at the issues identified by the inquiry and these submissions have been published by the ASC Committee for consideration within the inquiry.

Dr Paul Willis, who heads up the Centre for Research in Health and Social Care within the School for Policy Studies, said: "Adult social care is a key area of research within the School which directly informs our teaching across programmes such as social policy and social work.

"We really welcome this opportunity to directly inform policy reviews through submitting evidence based on research led by experts in the Centre and through the input of our partners in research, members of the ConnectED service user and carer group.

"The improvement and expansion of social care delivery is a priority area for social policy makers and we are delighted our research findings and messages will feed into this national agenda."

The submissions published by the Committee were:

  • Evidence from the six National Institute for Health and Care-funded partnerships in England which includes research from Professor Geraldine Macdonald (ASC0057).
  • Submission from the ConnectED service user and carer group from a study hosted by the School for Policy Studies and facilitated by Dr Jon Symonds (ASC0027).

The submissions are available on the UK Parliament website.

The key issues examined in the inquiry will be the invisibility of adult social care, and its consequences; better support for carers; and putting co-production at the heart of care.
