Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

The School of Modern Languages is an inclusive community of researchers, teachers, students, and professional services staff. We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusivity and seek to create an environment where all feel welcome and thrive, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion, age, disability or social background. As a School of Modern Languages, we strive to foster inter-cultural awareness while encouraging reflection on our own values and practices. We promote free speech in all our interactions and aim to nurture a climate of mutual respect and civil debate.

The School of Modern Languages is also committed to Widening Participation, both as part of our School Outreach activities, and as part of events organised for our staff and students throughout the academic year. Over the years we have hosted a language festival for local Y8 students, organised film screenings in our bespoke cinema and online, and much more. In 2024-2025 the School also launched a First Generation Scholars Network. This network's ultimate aim is to make the School of Modern Languages at Bristol a more supportive environment for those with little inherited knowledge of university life. We want to encourage conversations between 'first generation scholars' across all levels - staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students - that will help us to do this.
