Reid Derby - Aegis Professor of National Security Innovation

Reid is Head of Entrepreneurship in the Office of the Chief Science Advisor for National Security. His mission is to develop an entrepreneurial culture within the UK Government’s National Security Community and as part of the UK’s Innovation Clusters, solve National Security mission challenges in Science and Technology. 

Reid has worked as a chartered engineer, innovator and technology leader in the UK Defence and National Security communities for over 30 years. He has led a variety of government innovation programmes including in counter-terrorism, data science, AI, open source software, and cybersecurity. From 2020-2022 Reid was Strategic Innovation Advisor to the Golden Valley Development, helping to grow the innovation ecosystem in support of this pioneering garden community in Cheltenham, integrating hi-tech businesses, new homes and communities with the highest environmental sustainability. 

Reid has a wide cross-sector network that reaches across academia, industry, and government both in the UK and internationally, working with a host of technology startups, SMEs, global technology companies and academic partners. Reid is a coach and mentor for technology startups, working with the NCSC For Startups Programme and the RAEng Enterprise Fellowship Accelerator Programme among other programmes. 

Reid is a Director of the not-for-profit Community Interest Company, Cyber Cheltenham (CyNam), where he is an active community leader in the regional cyber cluster. He is also a technology advisor to Cheltenham Science Festival, one of the UK’s leading science festivals. Reid is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Technology and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA). 

 Reid was diagnosed with ADHD in 2021 and has since become a champion for neurodiversity in the workplace.
