Michael Cuthbert - Aegis Professor in Quantum Technologies

Michael Cuthbert was appointed to an Aegis Professorship in the School of Physics in September 2021, working in quantum technologies.

Michael will be based in the Quantum Engineering Technology Labs (QET Labs).

Michael’s appointment reflects the University of Bristol’s commitment to focus on and grow quantum information, science and technology as a key strategy. Bristol is a centre for quantum research and innovation, and actively supports entrepreneurship in quantum technology through the Quantum Technologies Enterprise Centre (QTEC).

Michael is currently the Director of the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC)In quantum computing, information is encoded and processed by controlling quantum statesusing effects that exist at atomic and sub-atomic levels, such as superposition and entanglement. The NQCC brings together academia, business and government to tackle the key challenges faced by quantum computing, develop new technology and support the UK’s emerging quantum computing industry, with the aim of making the country a world leader in this field.

Michael’s background is in cryogenics, superconducting materials and solid state physics research. Prior to joining the NQCC, he was Head of Quantum Technologies across the Oxford Instruments Group, following a number of technical and commercial leadership roles with Oxford Instruments over the previous 22 years in Japan, North America and the UK. Michael is a member of the Institute of Physics and sits on several advisory panels including the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme Strategic Advisory Board.
