Our History

  • We were one of the first universities in the UK to set up a public engagement team.
  • In partnership with the University of the West of England, we were instrumental in the creation of the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE).
  • Since our first vision for public engagement in 2004, we have continually evolved our strategic approach to public engagement.
  • Principles of equity in collaboration, respect and mutual benefit have always been central to our work.
  • We shifted our focus from events and one-way communication to deep, ongoing and high-quality two-way engagement between the University and its partners and communities.
  • We now actively support projects and engagement with research all over the world.
  • We are currently collaborating on what it means to be a global civic institution, as the University develops the Global Civic pillar of its new strategy (2022-2030).
