CQP Researcher wins 'I'm a Scientist...Get me out of here!'

Euan Allen, winner of 'I'm a Scientist...Get me out of here!'

28 June 2016

QECDT and CQP Researcher Euan Allen won science competition 'I'm a Scientist...Get me out of here!' - a free online event allows school students to meet and interact with scientists.

Students challenge the scientists over fast-paced online text-based live chats. They ask the scientists anything they want, and vote for their favourite scientist in an X-Factor style competition to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public.

Some of the questions Euan received included "How does a chameleon change colour?" and "Why are there so many planets and how were they made?" Euan said "I was amazed by the variety of questions that the students asked during the event, and in particular with how insightful they were. I did not expect there to be any questions relating to my research that I hadn’t been asked before, but in fact there were many. It’s really changed my perspective on some aspects of my research area, and I have really learnt a lot from the questions. I would urge the students to hold on to this inquisitive attitude as they progress through education and beyond, it is such a healthy thing to have."

Euan is an avid science communicator and recently won the prestigious Gold Award at the final of SET for Britain. He also attended the Cheltenham Science Festival in June this year, where he delighted the general public with the quirks of quantum mechanics and optics.

The next 'I'm a scientist...' will be held from the 7th - 18th November and they are looking for engineers and scientist to apply online to be in with a chance of winning £500 to communicate their work with the general public.
