Teaching innovation research

We have a team of academic staff whose primary role is to deliver engaging and innovative teaching for undergraduates.  We focus our activities on providing the best teaching and learning experience for our students and are continually updating teaching whilst ensuring our methods are backed up by evidence. We endeavour to involve students in this process and some final year project students and summer internship students are actively involved in developing teaching activities and improving and diversifying our curricula.

Our recent teaching innovations include:

  • pioneering physiology, pharmacology and neuroscience teaching based on Human Patient Simulators to illustrate aspects that cannot be demonstrated on living volunteers
  • web-based materials, including video, interactive media, quizzes and assignments, that support physiology, pharmacology and neuroscience laboratory-based practical teaching through the eBiolabs system
  • the use of gamification in our teaching to engage students improve learning and have some fun along the way
  • histology teaching, learning and assessment based on our 'virtual' digital microscope
  • interactive hands-on teaching sessions aimed at developing transferrable and academic skills or aiding students to understand difficult concepts fundamental to their learning
