St Paul’s Church Choral Scholarships
Information for candidates
In collaboration with its music foundation, One Equal Music, St Paul’s Church offers choral scholarships (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) to sing in the University Church Choir and partake in OEM outreach and performance. The alto scholarship is open to anyone, regardless of sex or gender.
Scholars sing at the weekly Friday rehearsal and Sunday service (Eucharist or Choral Evensong). Scholars additionally contribute an allotted amount of time to the One Equal Music foundation project: singing Great Sacred Music concerts at St Paul’s and across the city, and supporting choral music outreach in local schools under the direction and supervision of the One Equal Music development officer.
Opportunities for professional development, such as training and workshops, are arranged throughout the academic year. Scholars also have the opportunity to shape their own concert programmes and, if they wish, develop skills in event management, advertising, and videography in collaboration with One Equal Music projects.
Eligibility
The Choral Scholarships are held in conjunction with a degree or higher education course at the University of Bristol, UWE, or other higher education institutions in Bristol. Scholarships are offered on a one-year basis, with potential for extension into the next academic year.
Remuneration
The choral scholars each receive a financial bursary of £1,200 p.a. Additionally, they have access to the fine acoustic of St Paul’s for singing practice (with use of the grand piano and organ for instrumentalists), mentorship and references from the One Equal Music development officer, additional solo performance opportunities as part of the One Equal Music concert programme, and the support of a church community who deeply value choral music.
